Car finance for ABN holders, explained
Searching for car finance as an ABN holder puts you in a different lane from a salaried borrower, and mostly a better one. This page explains how lenders treat sole traders, partnerships and companies, what low-doc actually means, and what moves your rate.
Why an ABN changes the deal
When the vehicle is predominantly for business use, the purchase is commercial credit: it is written as a chattel mortgage against the vehicle rather than a consumer car loan. That means commercial rates, faster low-doc approvals, and terms set by the strength of the deal rather than a payslip. The trade-off is that consumer protections under the credit code do not apply, which is one reason the structure is reserved for genuine business use.
What low-doc means in practice
For an established ABN, most lenders will approve a vehicle without financial statements: the application, the invoice, and clean credit are often enough, with approvals commonly back in 24 to 48 hours. The usual sliding scale: two or more years of ABN registration and GST registration puts you in the strongest position; under two years is workable with a deposit, property backing, or a strong contract pipeline; a brand new ABN usually needs one of those plus industry experience.
What sets your rate
Security first: property-backed borrowers generally price around 6% to 9% p.a., non-property-backed around 9% to 13%. Then the vehicle itself (new and late-model used price best), the deposit if you choose to put one in, and your credit file. A deposit is a cashflow choice, not an approval requirement, for most established businesses.
Sole trader, partnership or company
All three qualify. Sole traders sign personally; company deals usually carry a director guarantee. The vehicle can be a ute, van, wagon or car; utes and vans carry the strongest business-use case, and a passenger car predominantly used for business is still financeable with a straightforward usage declaration.
Getting it moving
Have the ABN, identification and the dealer or private-sale details ready, and run your numbers first on the repayment calculator. If the vehicle is a ute, the ute finance page covers the tradie-specific angles.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get car finance with just an ABN and no financials?
Often yes. Established ABNs with clean credit are commonly approved low-doc, on the application and invoice alone, in 24 to 48 hours. Newer ABNs may need a deposit, property backing or evidence of work lined up.
How long does my ABN need to be registered?
Two or more years, ideally GST-registered, gets the widest lender panel and the best pricing. Under two years is still workable; brand new ABNs need something extra behind the deal.
Is this a personal loan or a business loan?
A chattel mortgage: commercial credit secured by the vehicle, used when the vehicle is predominantly for business use. It is not a consumer car loan and consumer credit protections do not apply.
Does bad credit rule me out?
Not automatically. Lenders weigh the story behind the file, the deposit, and security. Expect pricing at the upper end of the band until the file recovers.
