What a crane truck costs in Australia

Ventas Asset Lending  |  24 August 2026

Crane trucks are two machines on one rego: the truck and the crane on its back, and the price moves on both. Here are the current Australian bands from live listings.

The market, priced

ClassPrice (ex government charges)Financed, per week
Used 10-year-plus, smaller crane$110,000 to $160,000$545 to $795
Late-model used 6x4$160,000 to $260,000$795 to $1290
New medium-heavy 6x4 with crane$390,000 to $410,000$1935 to $2035
New heavy 8x4$450,000 to $465,000$2230 to $2305

The crane itself, brand, tonne-metre rating, remote operation, fly jib, swings the price by $30,000 to well past $100,000, and the crane makers publish no list prices: crane spec is a quote-only market, which is why two similar-looking trucks can sit $80,000 apart. On used trucks, the crane's service and certification history matters as much as the odometer.

The operator maths

A $200,000 late-model crane truck runs about $990 a week financed over five years, against hire-and-cartage rates that carry it inside a few working days. It is the classic one-truck business: the machine is the business, so the finance term should match the work pipeline behind it.

Financing one

Crane trucks write on chattel mortgage, new and used, with the crane certification feeding the assessment. Property-backed borrowers generally price around 6% to 9% p.a. and non-property-backed deals around 9% to 13%, with approvals commonly back in 24 to 48 hours. Run the truck through the truck finance calculator, or start at crane finance.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a crane truck cost in Australia?

Used trucks run $110,000 to $260,000 depending on age and crane, new medium-heavy 6x4 builds $390,000 to $410,000, and new heavy 8x4s to $465,000, all before government charges.

Why do similar crane trucks vary so much in price?

The crane: brand, tonne-metre rating, remote and jib options move the price by $30,000 to $100,000-plus, and crane pricing is quote-only, so the spec sheet matters more than the truck badge.

What should I check on a used crane truck?

The crane's certification and service history first, then truck kilometres and body condition. A crane due its major inspection is a real cost against the price.

Can I finance a used crane truck from a private sale?

Yes, on chattel mortgage terms, with the machine identified and the crane certification considered in the structure.
