What it costs to start a traffic control business in Australia
Traffic management is a $2 billion industry that buys utes, boards and lights, and almost nobody publishes what any of it costs. Most new pricing is quote-only, so the used market carries the real numbers. Here they are.
The equipment, at real listed prices
| Item | Used (listed) | New (where published) |
|---|---|---|
| Trailer-mounted VMS board | $5,750 to $11,400 | quote-only; hire $275 to $1,100/wk |
| Arrow board (trailer or vehicle mount) | $1,100 to $2,900 | $4,250 to $6,750 |
| Portable traffic light set (pair) | $3,000 to $8,000 | ~$26,000 |
| Traffic cones, per 100 | $2,500 to $6,000 | |
| Multi-message sign frames | ~$35 each plus panels | |
| Truck-mounted attenuator | hire-dominant; buying is quote-only | quote-only |
The new-versus-used spread is the biggest in any niche we have priced: a new compliant light set runs around $26,000 against $3,000 to $8,000 used. The catch is compliance: gear must meet the Australian standards for signals, arrow boards and reflectivity plus state type-approval, and non-compliant import kit can shut a site down. Compliance is the price floor, and it is why most startups hire the VMS boards and attenuators rather than buy them first.
The startup number
A working ballpark for a two-crew start: two used work utes or trucks at $40,000 to $60,000, a compliant equipment kit, boards, lights, cones, signs and radios, at $20,000 to $35,000 buying used, insurance and licensing $5,000 to $10,000, plus working capital, call it roughly $50,000 to $150,000 depending on how much you hire versus own. Against controller charge-out rates of $400 to $600 a day, the equipment maths works early; the working capital to carry 30 to 60 day payment terms is what catches new operators.
Financing it
Vehicles and boards write on chattel mortgage; the working capital gap is what invoice finance exists for, bringing those 30 to 60 day head-contractor payments forward. Property-backed borrowers generally price around 6% to 9% p.a. and non-property-backed deals around 9% to 13%, with approvals commonly back in 24 to 48 hours. Run the vehicle and equipment package through the repayment calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to start a traffic control business?
Roughly $50,000 to $150,000 for a two-crew start: two used vehicles, a compliant used equipment kit, insurance and licensing, plus working capital. Hiring the big-ticket boards instead of buying lowers the entry.
How much is a VMS board?
Used trailer-mounted VMS boards list at $5,750 to $11,400. New boards are quote-only in Australia, and hire runs $275 to $1,100 a week by display type.
Why is compliance such a big deal in traffic equipment?
Signals, arrow boards and reflective gear must meet Australian standards and state type-approval. Non-compliant kit can shut a site down, which is why approved equipment costs multiples of generic imports.
What finance does a traffic control startup actually need?
Chattel mortgage for the vehicles and boards, and invoice finance for the working capital gap, because head contractors pay in 30 to 60 days while wages run weekly.
