Finance question
Can I finance a Western Star truck for my business?
Yes. Lenders finance Western Stars, and a late model truck with a clear work contract is a routine deal. Used prime movers and tippers list from $79,000 to $236,500 plus GST, and older, high-kilometre trucks may need a shorter term or a bigger deposit, subject to lender assessment.

The short answer
Kilometres and work behind the truck matter most
A Western Star is a bonneted heavy truck that road train and heavy haulage operators often price against a Kenworth. The Western Star site publishes no prices, so the market you can see is dealer listings. Our Western Star prices guide surveyed eleven of them: a 2019 5864SS lists at $79,000, a 2018 4964FXC with 288,226 km lists at $236,500 plus GST, and one new 2025 48X sleeper is listed at $400,000. Most new 49X and 48X trucks are price on application.
A late model Western Star with a contract behind it is a routine deal. Lenders are more cautious on the oldest, highest-kilometre trucks. A 2013 prime mover at 1.5 million km may get a shorter term, a lower advance or a bigger deposit, and a thin used market for the model gives the valuer fewer comparable sales than a Kenworth. These are general broker observations, not published lender policy, and every lender decides for itself.
The usual structure is a chattel mortgage written over the truck, which is valued on what it would sell for, not the vendor's ask. A property-backed loan on a home or other property can fund the deposit or most of the purchase, with your property at risk if the truck does not earn. Ventas is a broker across 40+ lenders, not a single bank, and there is no upfront fee to you; the lender pays us on settlement.

A worked example
A used 2021 Western Star 4800 FXB is listed at $150,000 plus GST. GST adds $15,000, and inspection, roadworthy, registration, transfer and first insurance add $14,500, so the cash needed is $179,500. A chattel mortgage at 80 per cent of the GST-exclusive price funds $120,000, the deposit is $30,000, and $29,500 covers GST and costs. Illustrative only.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Will a lender fund a high-kilometre Western Star?
Some will, with conditions. A truck near 1.5 million km may get a shorter term, a lower advance or a larger deposit. Engine evidence and service history help.
How much deposit do I need on a Western Star?
It varies by lender and truck. Our guide's worked example uses an 80 per cent advance on the GST-exclusive price, leaving a 20 per cent deposit, plus cash for GST and costs.
Do I pay GST on the truck up front?
Usually yes, GST is paid at purchase. Whether you can claim it back, and how a chattel mortgage affects your tax, is a question for your accountant.
Can I buy a new X Series on finance?
Yes, new trucks can be funded. Most new 49X and 48X listings are price on application, so get a written dealer quote and send it to your broker.
