What it costs to buy a smash repair business in Australia
Smash repair businesses are listed from $200,000 for a small owner-run shop to $3.3m for a 23-staff shop turning over $6.5m. Shops that live on insurer work ask about 2.4 to 4.5 times EBITDA (our arithmetic). Profit, insurer work share, staff and the lease drive the price, not the booth count.
A smash repair business is priced on the profit left after the owner is paid, and on how much of that profit depends on insurers. That is why a walk-in, walk-out panel and paint shop in Shepparton asks $220,000 while a Queensland shop with 28 staff and about 95 per cent insurer-referred work asks $2.6m. This guide sets out what 14 live listings ask, how brokers and the listings value a shop, what the equipment is worth, the licence and compliance costs, and how the purchase is funded.
What smash repair businesses sell for
If you are weighing a servicing business instead, read our guide to buying a mechanic workshop. A smash repairer adds spray booths and a dependence on insurers that servicing does not have. The table surveys 14 live listings on Bsale, AnyBusiness and Benchmark Business Sales on 22 October 2026. Figures are the vendor's or broker's, indicative market data and not Ventas offers, and several listings say their key features are AI generated. SAV means stock at valuation and WIP means work in progress, both paid on top of the price.
| Listing | Format | Turnover or profit shown | Insurer work shown | Asking price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mount Gravatt, QLD (Bsale 685482) | Smash repairer, 28 staff, under supervision. Premises not included | Turnover $8.08m, net profit $884,000 (FY2025) | About 95 per cent insurer-referred | $2,600,000 plus WIP and stock |
| West Mackay, QLD (Bsale 682301) | Panel and paint, 23.3 FTE, managed, 33 years | Turnover $6.5m, EBITDA $728,000, rent listed at $17,500 a year | All major insurers, certified repair facility | $3,300,000 plus stock |
| Sunshine Coast, QLD (Bsale 688386) | Smash repairer since 1984, two booths, 35 plus cars a week | Revenue $5,458,758, EBITDA $928,857 (three-year averages) | No share given | $3,200,000 plus SAV |
| Mooloolaba, QLD (Bsale 689190) | Smash repairer, 40 to 50 repairs a week, semi-managed | Turnover over $6.4m, profit over $1.2m listed as PEBITDA (FY2026) | No share given | $2,900,000 plus stock, reduced |
| Cairns, QLD (Bsale 682977) | Panel and spray painting plus a car rental division of 80 vehicles | Revenue $3,080,823, adjusted profit $1,289,607 (YE2026) | Not disclosed | $3,200,000 including stock and plant. Freehold separate at $2.3m |
| Rocklea, Brisbane, QLD (Benchmark bus6648) | Panel shop premises and plant, no goodwill, not trading | Rent $170,000 a year net. Installed plant valued at about $310,000 | Not applicable | $220,000 |
| Perth (Vincent), WA (AnyBusiness 3472057) | Smash repairer, over 40 years | Revenue over $3.25m, profit over $540,000 (FY2026) | Approved repairer for RAC and most insurers | $1,495,000 plus SAV |
| Perth eastern suburbs, WA (AnyBusiness 3445439) | 700 square metres, two spray booths | Not disclosed | Rated highly by insurers | $275,000 plus stock |
| Parramatta, NSW (Bsale 688009) | Automotive repair with spray painting, over 35 years | Turnover over $610,000 (FY2026), about $400,000 from corporate clients | Not disclosed | $250,000 |
| Mitcham, VIC (AnyBusiness 3472034) | Panel beating, 600 square metres, long lease | Taking $800,000 a year | Not disclosed | $370,000 |
| Latrobe Valley, VIC (AnyBusiness 3418320) | Smash repairer, one oven, five prep areas | Sales $1.7m | Recommended repairer for multiple large insurers | $450,000 plus SAV |
| Williamstown, VIC (AnyBusiness 3472166) | Panel beating, SEETAL booth with oven, rent $3,100 a month, lease 3 plus 3 plus 3 years | Not disclosed | Sought after by insurers | $250,000 including stock |
| Shepparton, VIC (AnyBusiness 3465327) | Panel and paint, near new high clearance booth | Not disclosed | Trusted by insurers and dealers | $220,000, walk-in walk-out |
| Fyshwick, ACT (Bsale 678138) | Smash repair and refinishing, owner plus one employee | Average profit $240,000 a year | None, mostly private customers | $200,000, walk-in walk-out |
Two things stand out. Price follows profit and insurer work, not the building: Shepparton and Williamstown ask $220,000 to $250,000 for a booth and a workshop, while the Queensland and Perth shops that disclose profit ask $1.5m to $3.3m against $540,000 to $1.3m a year. And Rocklea shows what plant alone can be worth: $220,000 buys premises and installed plant the broker values at about $310,000, but no customers. Live supply was thin in New South Wales and we found none in South Australia or Tasmania. Treat the table as questions to ask.
Insurer work, panel status and valuation
Insurers fund most smash repairs in Australia and decide which shops get the work (insuranceNEWS, 6 July 2026). Morgan Business Sales names IAG, Suncorp, Allianz, QBE and RACQ as insurers running tiered repairer networks. Network status is granted by the insurer, not owned by the vendor, so the question is how much profit rides on it.
| Method | Published range or listing evidence | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Single-site independent, under $500,000 EBITDA | 2.0x to 3.5x EBITDA, often asset-based. Lower for owner-dependent goodwill, no insurer panel, cash-pay work and ageing equipment | Morgan Business Sales, April 2026 |
| Single site with a preferred insurer agreement, $500,000 to $1.5m EBITDA | 3.0x to 5.0x EBITDA. Higher with several insurers, 30 plus vehicles a week, management depth and ADAS capability. Lower with one insurer, insurer price caps and labour shortage risk | Morgan Business Sales, April 2026 |
| Implied by the listings above | Mount Gravatt 2.9x, Perth 2.8x, Sunshine Coast 3.4x, Mackay 4.5x, Mooloolaba up to 2.4x. Fyshwick, with no insurer work, 0.8x | Listing figures, our arithmetic. Before SAV and WIP, and profit measures differ |
| Price against turnover | Eight listings that show both, leaving out Cairns with its rental division, sit at 0.26 to 0.59 times turnover (Latrobe Valley lowest, Sunshine Coast highest) | Listing figures, our arithmetic |
Morgan's multiples are one broker's benchmark, not audited sale data, and the listings are asking prices. They still agree: about 2.4x to 4.5x with insurer work, under 1x for owner-run Fyshwick. Morgan treats 80 per cent or more of revenue from one insurer as a risk, and Mount Gravatt, about 95 per cent insurer-referred, asks 2.9x. Mount Gravatt also lists insurer approval within four business days and payment within seven, so you carry wages and parts meanwhile. Ask each insurer in writing whether network status carries over to a new owner. We found no published rule.
Equipment and what it costs to replace
Booth, bench and measuring prices are quoted job by job. We found no Australian price list on 22 October 2026, so the table shows what listings include and the one plant valuation we found.
| Equipment | What the listings show | Replacement cost evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Spray booths and prep bays | Two booths at Sunshine Coast and Perth eastern suburbs, a near new booth at Shepparton, a SEETAL booth with oven at Williamstown | No Australian price list found. Get three installed quotes |
| Frame bench and measuring system | None of the 13 trading listings names one. Mount Gravatt lists structural repair and ADAS recalibration | No Australian price list found |
| Whole workshop, installed | Rocklea: one booth, three prep bays, a paint mix room, compressor and air line | Broker values installed plant at about $310,000 |
| ADAS and EV handling | Mount Gravatt lists ADAS recalibration and EV and hybrid high-voltage handling | Morgan lists ADAS capability as a multiple driver. Cost not published |
A vendor's plant value is a claim until someone else prices it, so ask for the asset register and serial numbers and have the plant valued before you accept the split in the contract. Booths and benches can be financed as equipment (see equipment finance and our answer on equipment for a business you just bought), but a lender values used gear at what it would resell for.
Licences, staff and compliance
Rules differ by state, and we only list what we confirmed on 22 October 2026.
| State | Rule | Cost or penalty |
|---|---|---|
| NSW | Motor vehicle repairer licence to own or run a repair business, including through a company. Fit and proper, sufficient financial resources, council approval and the right qualification | 2026-27 grant, one premises: $886 (1 year) to $2,362 (5 years) online |
| WA | Repair business licence for owners and a repairer's certificate for anyone who supervises or does the work. One certified repairer per three uncertified | Unlicensed repair: fine up to $50,000 plus $1,000 a day |
Neither the NSW nor the WA pages say whether a licence transfers on a sale, so ask the regulator before you sign. We did not confirm a repairer licence in the other states, so check with your state regulator and council. Spray painting is also an environmental matter: the NSW EPA publishes an auto repair shop guide on booth design, stacks and solvents. Ask the vendor for council approvals.
People are the constraint. MTAA and Deloitte research, cited by insuranceNEWS, finds only 26 per cent of panelbeater vacancies and 29 per cent of vehicle painter vacancies are being filled, and industry estimates put the shop count in the low to mid 3,000s, down from about 6,700 in 1992. Ask who holds the trade qualifications, who stays after settlement, and what happens to the work if the best painter leaves.
What you pay on top of the price
The asking price is rarely the cheque. These costs sit on top.
| Cost | What it is | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Stock and WIP | Parts and paint counted near settlement, plus labour and parts on cars in the shop, paid at cost | Sunshine Coast stock about $30,000. Mount Gravatt WIP and stock at cost, amounts not shown |
| Lease assignment | Landlord consent, and a longer term if the lease is short | Not published, ask the landlord in writing |
| Legal and due diligence | Solicitor for contract and lease, accountant to test profit against BAS and bank statements | Bsale: $1,500 to $8,000 legal depending on complexity. Lawpath: standard package $3,500 under $1m |
Transfer duty depends on the state and the contract. Queensland counts goodwill, plant and trading stock as business assets that can make a purchase dutiable. New South Wales exempts goodwill and stock, but fixtures are always dutiable and freestanding plant is dutiable if sold with other dutiable property such as a lease assignment. A booth fixed to the building may count as a fixture. Western Australia charges duty on goodwill and plant but not stock, with a concessional rate at $200,000 or less. Victoria charges none on fixtures of $2 million or less when you buy without the land. Confirm with your accountant before you sign.
GST. A going concern sale is GST-free if it is for payment, the buyer is registered or required to be, both sides agree in writing, and the seller supplies everything needed to keep operating and trades to the day of supply (ATO). Otherwise 10 per cent GST applies, $90,000 on a $900,000 price. Check whether each listing price includes GST.
Financing a smash repair purchase
Insurer work is what lenders weigh most. If most jobs come from one or two insurers, a lender asks what happens when an insurer moves volume to another shop, caps its prices or drops the shop from its network. Network status is the insurer's to give, so a lender does not value it like equipment or property. Expect a larger deposit than for a servicing workshop, a shorter loan on the goodwill, and more weight on the plant, the lease and your property security. Ventas is a finance broker, not a lender, so we do not quote rates here.
Illustrative only, subject to lender assessment. A realistic purchase of an independent shop at an $800,000 asking price:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Goodwill | $400,000 |
| Plant and equipment | $350,000 |
| Stock and work in progress at valuation | $60,000 |
| Asking price plus stock and WIP | $810,000 |
| Legal, accounting and due diligence | $12,000 |
| Licence, lease and transfer costs | $4,000 |
| Working capital buffer for wages, parts and insurer payment terms | $100,000 |
| Total cash needed, before any transfer duty | $926,000 |
And how it is typically funded across lender types:
| Funding layer | Amount | What it covers | Secured on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business acquisition loan | $250,000 | Part of the goodwill | Business assets, personal guarantees, lease consent |
| Equipment finance | $200,000 | Part of the booths, bench and plant | The equipment itself |
| Your funds: savings or a property-backed loan | $476,000 | Rest of goodwill and plant, stock, costs and working capital | Cash, or your home or other property |
| Total | $926,000 |
Debt here is a little over half the price. Equipment finance is secured on the gear and valued on what used booths and benches would resell for, which can be less than the vendor allocates. The premises are usually a separate deal: Mount Gravatt and Cairns both leave the property out. A property-backed loan secured on your home or another property can fund the equity gap, because the lender relies on the property instead of the shop. The cost is that your property is at risk if the shop fails.
What makes a smash repair deal fundable:
- Spread of work. Several insurers plus fleet, dealer and private work, shown in statements.
- Trading history. Two to three years of financials that reconcile to BAS and bank statements.
- Lease. A committed term at least as long as the loan, with landlord consent.
- Staff. Qualified painters and panel beaters who stay after settlement.
- You. Trade or shop experience, and property or cash to put in.
To get a number from Ventas, send the listing, the vendor's split between goodwill, plant and stock, two to three years of financials and BAS, the work share by insurer, the equipment list with ages, the lease and its remaining term, and the security you can offer. Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to buy a smash repair business in Australia?
Live listings run from $200,000 for an owner-run shop in the ACT to $3.3m for a 23-staff Queensland shop turning over $6.5m. Insurer-focused shops ask about 2.4 to 4.5 times EBITDA. Add stock, work in progress, legal and due diligence costs, any state duty and working capital on top.
How is a smash repair business valued?
Morgan Business Sales puts independent single-site shops at 2.0 to 3.5 times EBITDA and shops with a preferred insurer agreement at 3.0 to 5.0 times. Dependence on one insurer, owner-dependent goodwill and ageing equipment push the multiple down. These are one broker's benchmarks, not audited sales.
Does insurer work make a smash repair business worth more?
Usually, if it is spread across insurers. Morgan lists a multi-insurer panel as an upper-range driver and dependence on one insurer as a lower-range one. Network status is granted by the insurer, so ask each one in writing whether it continues after a change of ownership.
Do I need a licence to buy a smash repair business?
In NSW you need a motor vehicle repairer licence, from $886 for one year on 2026-27 fees. In Western Australia you need a repair business licence and certified repairers, and unlicensed work risks a fine up to $50,000. We did not confirm a licence in every state, so check yours.
Can I get finance to buy a smash repair business?
Often, but expect a larger deposit than for a servicing workshop. Typical support is a business acquisition loan on goodwill, equipment finance on booths and benches, and property security for any gap. Insurer concentration, lease term, staff and your experience decide it. Finance is subject to lender assessment.
