What a semi trailer costs in Australia in 2026

Ventas Asset Lending  |  Reviewed by Caleb Morehu  |  Updated 26 September 2026

A new curtainsider or drop deck semi trailer costs about $84,000 to $225,000 in Australia in 2026. Refrigerated trailers run $180,000 for a single unit to $660,000 for a 34 pallet B-double set, side tippers $79,000 to $106,000, and heavy low loaders $175,000 to $450,000. Used five to ten year old trailers list from $35,000 to $220,000 depending on type.

A semi trailer's price turns on what sits behind the kingpin, not the badge on the front. A bare 22 pallet flat deck curtainsider is $83,700 new; a 34 pallet drop deck with mezzanine posts, BPW suspension and a curtainsider body is $225,420. Add refrigeration and a single 22 pallet reefer is $179,850 drive away, while a 34 pallet refrigerated B-double set with roll back Thermo King units runs to $660,000. Tippers, tankers, low loaders and dollies sit in their own bands again. This page prices each type from real Australian listings surveyed in September 2026, shows what a five to ten year old trailer holds, and covers registration and certification costs.

Semi trailer prices by type in 2026

Indicative bands from Australian dealer and marketplace listings surveyed in September 2026. New prices are as the dealer or builder quoted them, excluding government charges unless marked drive away; used prices are ex GST asking prices. Weekly figures assume a 5 year chattel mortgage at 10.5% p.a. with no deposit and no balloon, near $4.96 a week per $1,000 borrowed. Your rate depends on your profile and security, not the trailer.

The step from a single flat deck to a 34 pallet drop deck with mezzanine posts and BPW air suspension roughly doubles the price within the one builder's range. Refrigeration is the biggest single jump in the whole trailer market: a 22 pallet reefer at $179,850 costs about double a comparable dry curtainsider, and a complete 34 pallet refrigerated B-double set at $660,000 costs close to three flat deck B-double units.

The Krueger drop deck B-double at $139,500 for an 11 year old trailer against $195,100 to $225,420 for the closest new CIMC equivalent shows how well a well kept mezzanine deck holds its money. The gap between the Tieman fuel tanker at $139,800 (2012) and the O'Phee fibreglass tanker at $64,990 (2008) is compliance and material as much as age; an aluminium tanker with current road train certification sells for close to double a fibreglass unit twice its age.

What moves the price

Deck type and pallet capacity. A flat deck curtainsider is the cheapest way to move 22 pallets, from $83,700 new. Drop the deck for extra clearance, add mezzanine posts so a lower tier of pallets can be doubled up, and specify BPW air suspension, and the same 34 pallet capacity climbs to $195,100 to $225,420. The step from a single trailer to a matched 34 pallet B-double set, two trailers coupled by a dolly, roughly doubles the outlay again.

Refrigeration. A Thermo King or Carrier unit, the insulated body, the extra axle rating for the fridge motor's weight and, for a multi-temperature run, a bulkhead between zones, all add up. A single 22 pallet reefer at $179,850 is about double a dry equivalent, and a 34 pallet refrigerated B-double set with roll back units at $660,000 is the most expensive trailer combination in this guide.

Body material. Tippers and tankers price on what the body is made of as much as on capacity. A Hardox wear-plate tipper body outlasts mild steel under abrasive loads and costs accordingly; an aluminium tanker saves tare weight over steel and roughly doubles the price of an old fibreglass unit, which is why the 2012 Tieman aluminium fuel tanker still asks $139,800 against $64,990 for the 2008 O'Phee fibreglass tank.

Axle count and rating. Tri-axle is the standard semi trailer configuration; a quad-axle low loader like the Drake Ag Widener at $410,000 carries a much higher payload and a widening mechanism for oversize loads, which is most of the gap to a standard tri-axle drop deck. A dolly, the tandem-axle unit that couples a lead and tail trailer into a B-double or road train, is the cheapest unit in the whole trailer family at $48,500 to $49,500.

Builder tier. CIMC and Krueger sit close together at the same pallet count. Drake is priced as an engineering business as much as a trailer builder, and its wideners are quoted individually rather than off a rate card because each one is speced to the load. Pair any of these trailers with a prime mover; the Kenworth prices guide covers what pulls them, and the tipper truck cost guide covers the rigid alternative to a tipper trailer and dog.

What a five to ten year old trailer holds

Drop deck and B-double trailers hold value better than most rolling stock. The 2015 Krueger 34 pallet drop deck mezzanine B-double at $139,500, eleven years old in 2026, is about 62% to 72% of the $195,100 to $225,420 a comparable new CIMC drop deck B-double lists for. The 2019 Krueger ST-3-0D curtainsider at $65,940 is a seven year old trailer holding well against an $83,700 new 22 pallet equivalent, about 79%.

Refrigerated trailers depreciate faster because the fridge unit itself has a working life and a resale market of its own. The 2015 Maxitrans 24 pallet freezer van with its original Thermo King unit asks $69,500, about 39% of the $179,850 a new 22 pallet reefer lists for eleven years on, and a 2012 unit of the same type is down to $35,000. A tired compressor or a system out of gas takes real money off a reefer that a general service can't fix.

Low loaders are the outlier. The 2015 Drake 4x4 full widener rear steer at $350,000 is about 78% to 89% of what a new Drake Full Widener ($395,000) or Steering Widener ($450,000) costs, eleven years on. Heavy steel wideners are built to a 15 to 20 year working life and priced on load rating and NHVR compliance rather than cosmetics, which is why they hold dollars the way a Kenworth prime mover does.

Registering and certifying a semi trailer

Heavy vehicle registration is charged by axle count under the national Heavy Vehicle National Law, collected state by state. In NSW from 1 August 2025, a semi trailer or B-double tail trailer registers at $816 for 1 axle, $1,990 for 2 axles, $2,115 for 3 axles and $2,120 for 4 or more axles; a dog or pig trailer with 4 or more axles, the configuration behind a tipper and dog, is $3,100. A B-double lead trailer registers on the same scale as the tail trailer. Other states set their own rates on the same national charging model, budget close to these figures unless you check your own state's schedule.

On top of registration, a heavy trailer needs a certificate of inspection before first registration and, in most states, periodically after that. NSW's Authorised Inspection Scheme charges up to $109 for a combined safety, design and identity check on a trailer over 2 tonnes gross trailer mass or fitted with breakaway brakes, or $61 for a safety check alone, under the fee schedule current from 1 July 2025. A dangerous goods tanker or a widener carrying an oversize permit load adds its own compliance cost on top, budget for a specialist inspection rather than a standard heavy vehicle check.

Financing a semi trailer purchase

Trailers are written as chattel mortgages over three to seven years, the same structure used for the prime mover: you own the trailer from settlement, the lender registers its interest on the PPSR and releases it when the loan is paid out, and the GST comes back on your next BAS. A trailer bought with a prime mover is usually financed on one contract; a trailer bought on its own, to add capacity to an existing fleet or to pair with a truck you already own, is financed the same way against the trailer's own invoice. A B-double set, lead and tail trailer plus dolly, can go on one contract even when it is two or three separate invoices, as long as they settle together.

As a working rule, property-backed borrowers price around 6% to 9% p.a. and non-property-backed deals around 9% to 13%, subject to lender assessment. New, used, dealer, private and auction purchases are all fundable; a private sale adds an inspection, and an ageing tanker or reefer usually needs its compliance plate and, for a fridge unit, its service history sighted before approval. Refrigerated and tanker trailers with current certification finance more easily than the same trailer with a lapsed inspection, because the lender is underwriting the asset's earning capacity as much as its price.

To get a number, tell Ventas the trailer (builder, type, year, axles, pallet or litre capacity), whether it is bought alone or with a prime mover, the price, the seller, your ABN age and whether you own property. How much does a used semi trailer cost?

Dealer listings in September 2026 show a 2015 Krueger 34 pallet drop deck B-double at $139,500, a 2014 Vawdrey drop deck curtainsider at $55,000, and a 2015 Maxitrans 24 pallet reefer with its original Thermo King unit at $69,500, all ex GST. Condition, compliance history and hours on the fridge unit move the price more than age alone.

How much does a B-double set cost?

A new 34 pallet dry van B-double unit lists at $137,600 to $285,000 depending on builder and deck type, CIMC and Maxitrans MaxiCUBE among them, with a complete set of two trailers priced above a single unit. A refrigerated 34 pallet B-double set with roll back Thermo King units is $660,000.

How much does a refrigerated fridge trailer cost?

A new single 22 pallet reefer, such as the Trailer Manufacturing Group Ice Vault, is $179,850 drive away. Used Thermo King equipped freezer vans from Vawdrey, FTE and Maxitrans list at $69,500 to $88,000 for 2015 to 2018 trailers ex GST. A new 34 pallet refrigerated B-double set is $660,000.

How much does it cost to register a semi trailer in Australia?

In NSW from 1 August 2025, a semi trailer or B-double tail trailer registers at $816 for 1 axle up to $2,120 for 4 or more axles, and a dog or pig trailer with 4 or more axles is $3,100. Add a certificate of inspection, up to $109 under the current NSW Authorised Inspection Scheme fee schedule. Other states charge on the same national model.

Can I finance a semi trailer bought at auction or privately?

Yes. Lenders fund dealer, private and auction purchases as chattel mortgages, written on the trailer's own invoice whether or not it is bought with a prime mover. A private sale adds an inspection, and an ageing tanker or reefer usually needs its compliance plate and service history sighted before approval.
