What a water truck or water cart costs in Australia
A new 13,000 litre Isuzu water truck is advertised at $282,241 to $291,345 ex GST. Mine-spec and 18,000 to 20,000 litre trucks run about $290,000 to $390,000. Used rigid water trucks start at $79,000 for a 2006 Isuzu. A slip-on 10,000 litre cart for your own truck is $29,100 inc GST.
A water truck is two purchases in one: a cab chassis, and a tank body with a pump, spray bars and sometimes a cannon. That is why the same 13,000 litre capacity can cost $29,100 as a slip-on cart for a truck you already own, $109,000 as a 2006 council truck, or $291,345 as a new Isuzu. Tank size, mine spec, spray equipment and whether the price includes GST move the number more than the badge on the cab. This guide sets out what 12 live truck listings ask, what slip-on carts and tanks cost, what hire rates say about buy versus hire, and how a water truck is funded.
What water trucks sell for
The table surveys live listings on Machines4U, truckdealers and usedmachineryfinder, opened on 31 October 2026. Prices are the seller's, indicative market data and not Ventas offers. Machines4U shows ex GST prices, while truckdealers shows GST-inclusive prices, so the two are not directly comparable until you strip the 10 per cent. Several Machines4U sellers list four states at once and name their offices in Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, so the state in the first column is the truck's location only where a town is named.

Four things stand out. First, tank size and spec set the price band. The two 13,000 litre new Isuzus sit about $9,000 apart ($282,241 and $291,345), and the 18,000 litre 8x4 at $289,662 is barely dearer than the 13,000 litre FXZ because the 8x4 listing leaves spray bars and cannon as extras. Second, mine spec is the big step: the 14,000 litre mine-spec FVZ at $328,800 sits $31,960 above the 14,000 litre road-spec FVZ at $296,840, and the 20,000 litre mine-spec FYH at $389,800 is $100,138 above the 18,000 litre FYH (our arithmetic, tank size also differs). Third, used trucks drop away fast: the 2021 FVD with an 8,000 litre tank asks $165,000 ex GST, while 2006 trucks ask $79,000 to $109,000. Fourth, listings can disagree with themselves. Three Machines4U ads show one price in the header and a different one in the description, and one truckdealers ad shows both 14,000 and 18,000 litres, so confirm the exact price, GST and tank with the seller.
We could not open a priced Australian listing for an articulated mine water cart such as a Cat 725, so we have not tabled any. Those are mostly sold on application or by auction, and the price follows hours, tank and mine compliance.
Slip-on water carts and tanks
If you already own a tipper or cab chassis, a skid or slip-on cart is the cheap route. A polyethylene tank alone is a few thousand dollars, and a complete cart with pump is under $30,000. The catch is capacity and duty: poly slip-ons suit dust suppression, tipper-body hauling and small jobs, not full-time road work or mine haulage. Oxquip prices below were read on 31 October 2026 and the product data marks them as GST-inclusive; confirm at checkout.
| Item (Oxquip, TTi and Rapid Spray) | What it is | Price |
|---|---|---|
| TTi AquaDelivery 10,000 L truck water cart (TT PWD10000ALSG) | Slip-on tank with 1,000 L/min petrol pump, fits your own truck | $29,100 inc GST, plus freight |
| TTi AquaMove 10,000 L water cart tank (TT STC10000SG) | Polyethylene tank only, no pump | $12,465 inc GST, plus freight |
| Rapid Spray 13,000 L truck water tank (RS PTC13000ATO) | Polyethylene tank only, 4,000 x 2,350 mm | $16,900 inc GST, plus freight |
| Steel mounting frame with pump plate | Option on the 13,000 L tank / the 10,000 L tank | $8,950 / $7,100 |
| Ball baffles | Option on the 13,000 L tank / the 10,000 L tank | $5,120 / $3,800 |
| Larger engine and pump on the AquaDelivery | Yanmar 10 HP diesel, 1,300 L/min | +$4,295 |
Add a frame, baffles and a pump and a 13,000 litre tank build reaches about $31,000 ($16,900 + $8,950 + $5,120, our arithmetic, before a pump and freight). That is still around a tenth of a new complete truck, but it ties up a second truck while the tank is on. If the carrier is a tipper, see our tipper truck cost guide for what that chassis costs.
What moves the price
- Tank size and material. Galvanised steel and poly suit most work. Larger tanks usually need an 8x4 chassis, as the 18,000 and 20,000 litre listings show.
- Baffles. Oxquip charges $5,120 to fit ball baffles on a 13,000 litre tank. Steel tanks carry internal baffles.
- Pump and spray equipment. Hydraulic pump, rear fan sprays, under-body spray bar, dribble bar and in-cab controls. One 8x4 ad lists extra spray bars and a cannon as extras.
- Water cannon and hose reel. Listed on the mine-spec trucks and the WA dealer trucks. Fire fighting fit-outs add a pump and hose reel.
- Mine spec. ROPS, mine electrical, LED lighting, beacons, isolators and stairs. Check the site induction rules before you buy a road-spec truck for a mine.
- Age and kilometres. Used water trucks often carry low kilometres but high pump hours, so ask for service records.
- GST basis. Ex GST and inc GST differ by 10 per cent, which is $28,000 on a $282,241 truck.
Buy or hire
iseekplant publishes hourly hire rates. Its page carries a 2023 byline and a 2025 title, so treat the rates as indicative. All rates are ex GST. Wet hire includes the driver and running costs, dry hire does not.
| Water cart size | Dry hire per hour | Wet hire per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 4,000 to 8,000 L | $75 to $105 | $155 to $162 |
| 9,000 to 16,000 L | $85 to $120 | $125 to $178 |
| 17,000 to 20,000 L | $112 to $130 | $172 to $192 |
| Over 20,000 L | $140 to $185 | $195 to $245 |
| Dump truck mounted, 30,000 L | $100 to $115 | $162 to $178 |
Against a $282,241 truck, wet hire at $125 to $178 an hour takes roughly 1,600 to 2,260 hours to add up to the purchase price (our arithmetic, before running costs, finance costs and resale value). If you can keep a truck busy for most of a year, buying starts to make sense. If work is patchy, a slip-on tank on a truck you already have, or hire, costs less. Hire rates also show what an owner can charge out a truck for.
Who buys and what they check
Buyers are civil and earthmoving contractors, quarry and mine suppliers, councils' contractors and dust suppression operators. They tend to check the pump and spray fit-out, the tank lining, the work in the truck's history and whether the body can be moved to a new chassis. Our Isuzu truck prices guide covers the cab chassis side.
Financing a water truck purchase
Water trucks are financed like other heavy trucks, but lenders look at them as a work asset with a narrow buyer pool. Banks and non-banks will lend against a late-model Isuzu, Hino or Fuso water truck bought from a dealer, because it has a clear resale market. A 2006 council truck, a mine-spec 20,000 litre unit or an articulated water cart is harder: the resale pool is smaller, so expect a bigger deposit, a shorter term or a lender that specialises in older trucks. Ventas is a finance broker, not a lender, so we do not quote rates here. They change with the lender, the asset age and your file.
Illustrative only, subject to lender assessment. A new 13,000 litre water truck:
| Item | Amount ex GST |
|---|---|
| New 13,000 L water truck, close to the two 2026 Isuzu listings above | $285,000 |
| Extras: extra spray bar, cannon or hose reel (our allowance) | $10,000 |
| Registration, delivery and set-up (our allowance) | $5,000 |
| Total purchase | $300,000 |
And how it is typically funded:
| Funding layer | Amount | Secured on |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment finance (chattel mortgage style) | $255,000 | The truck and tank, registered on the PPSR |
| Deposit from your funds, or a property-backed loan | $45,000 | Cash, or a property you own |
| Total | $300,000 |
Equipment finance is usually written as a chattel mortgage, with an optional balloon at the end, which lowers the repayment but leaves a lump sum to refinance or pay. Lenders value the truck at dealer or auction resale, and the water body counts for less than the cab chassis because it only suits the next water cart buyer. A property-backed loan can cover the deposit or most of an older truck, with the cost that your property is at risk. GST treatment and any depreciation or write-off rules depend on your business, so ask your accountant.
What makes a water truck deal fundable:
- Work lined up. A contract, a council or mine panel place, or a trading history that shows the hours.
- Truck age and spec. A late-model rigid from a dealer is easiest. Mine spec and older units need more explanation.
- Your position. Two years of financials, the ABN, and a deposit or other security.
- A clear purchase document. Whether the price is ex GST or inc GST, and what is included in the tank and spray fit-out.
To get a number from Ventas, send the listing or dealer quote, the tank size, whether it is new or used, the year and kilometres, your ABN and work lined up, and the deposit you can put in. Start at water truck finance, see truck finance, read the second-hand truck finance guide for older units, or compare the tipper truck cost guide if your slip-on tank will ride on a tipper. Finance is subject to lender assessment and approval.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a new water truck cost in Australia?
Live dealer listings in October 2026 ask $282,241 to $291,345 ex GST for a new 13,000 litre Isuzu FVZ or FXZ, and $289,662 for an 18,000 litre 8x4. Mine-spec trucks with a cannon and ROPS run $328,800 for 14,000 litres and $389,800 for 20,000 litres.
How much does a used water truck cost?
Used rigid trucks in our survey ask $79,000 to $109,000 ex GST for 2006 Isuzu FVZ 1400s with a 13,000 litre tank, and $165,000 for a 2021 Isuzu FVD with an 8,000 litre tank. Price follows age, kilometres, pump condition and tank state.
How much does a water cart tank cost without a truck?
A 10,000 litre polyethylene tank is $12,465 inc GST and a 13,000 litre tank is $16,900 inc GST at Oxquip, before freight. A 10,000 litre slip-on cart with a petrol pump is $29,100 inc GST. A frame, baffles and bigger pump add several thousand dollars.
Is it cheaper to hire a water truck than buy one?
Hire is cheaper for patchy work. iseekplant lists wet hire of a 9,000 to 16,000 litre cart at $125 to $178 an hour ex GST, so a $282,241 truck needs roughly 1,600 to 2,260 hours to match its price, before running costs and resale value (our arithmetic).
Can I finance a water truck?
Yes, usually with equipment finance secured on the truck, and often as a chattel mortgage. Late-model dealer trucks are the easiest to place. Older, mine-spec or articulated units may need a bigger deposit or a specialist lender. Finance is subject to lender assessment and approval.
