What a Volvo truck costs in Australia, new and used

Ventas Asset Lending  |  Reviewed by Caleb Morehu  |  Updated 29 October 2026

Volvo's model pages show no prices, and a dealer quotes a new truck to spec. Used asking prices we found run from $25,000 ex GST for a 2005 FM12 prime mover to $239,000 inc GST for a 2022 FH600 with 695,383 km. Kilometres, rated weight, engine and body drive the spread.

Volvo does not publish prices in Australia. Every model page, from the FH to the electric FL, sends you to a dealer, so the public evidence is the used market and what auction houses show. This guide sets out 11 priced Volvo listings across five states, opened on 22 October 2026, then the model range, how Volvo differs from Mack, what moves the price, what auction stock and the electric range tell you, the costs on top and how a truck is funded. Figures are sellers' asking prices, indicative market data and not Ventas offers.

What Volvo trucks are listed for

If you are weighing brands, read our Mack truck prices guide and our Kenworth prices guide alongside this one. The table lists 11 used Volvo trucks from Truck Dealers Australia and Machines4U, opened on 22 October 2026. Prices are shown as the seller stated them, and the last column converts to ex GST (our arithmetic, the inc GST price divided by 1.1). Truck Dealers shows seven Volvo listings, but one is an FL250 at price on application and two are the same South Australian truck, so five are distinct and priced. Its Queensland and Tasmania filters returned no Volvo.

Three things stand out.

Several listings contradict themselves. The FH600 shows 695,383 km in its field and 696,000 in its text, the Dry Creek FM12, the FE340 and the water cart send mixed signals on GST, three Truck Dealers odometers show no unit (we read them as kilometres), and the Swanbank figure is an auction start price. Confirm each point in writing before you pay a deposit.

FH, FH16, FM, FMX, FE and FL compared

Volvo Trucks Australia's own pages give the figures below. They list no prices, so use them to ask for a build sheet, not to price a truck.

ModelDiesel, per VolvoElectric version, per VolvoBuilt for

Volvo's pages disagree in places. The FH Electric model page says range up to 400 km while its specification page says up to 300 km, the FE diesel shows 250 to 350 hp in one place and 280 to 350 hp in another, and the model pages say EU 5 while the FH specification page lists Euro 6 engines. Read the rating and emissions level off the build plate.

Volvo or Mack: what differs

Volvo and Mack are both Volvo Group brands, and Volvo Group's Wacol plant page lists the FH, FM and FMX alongside Mack's Trident, Superliner, Titan and Anthem. pv magazine (9 July 2026) calls it the only plant in the world making Volvo and Mack side by side.

With the plant shared, the choice is the range. Volvo adds light and medium trucks (the FE and FL) and an electric line, which is why a used Volvo can be a prime mover, hooklift, compactor or water cart. Mack's four current models are all heavy-duty. Neither publishes a price. For Mack listings see our Mack truck prices guide.

What moves the price of a Volvo

New trucks, auction stock and the electric range

Volvo's model pages show no prices, diesel or electric, so a dealer quotes a new Volvo to spec.

Auction stock shows kilometres, not prices. Pickles listed 55 Volvo lots on 22 October 2026, across seven states and territories, and none shows a price on its search pages. Of 18 FH and FH16 prime movers built 2010 or later with kilometres shown, 12 show 1,000,000 km or more and the highest is 1,614,704 km (our arithmetic). A 2023 FH540 with 186,247 km is on Machines4U as ask for price, closing 3 November 2026. A Grays lot for a 2010 FH13 in Jandakot, WA, is open at a $9 bid with the reserve not met, so that bid is not a value. One Pickles page for a 2022 FH16 shows AU$175,840 without saying what it is, so we left it out.

Electric. Volvo lists six electric models. The FH, FM and FMX Electric pages show 300 to 540 kW, 360 to 540 kWh and up to 65 tonnes GCW, with a 99 minute DC charge from 0 to 100 per cent. The FE Electric shows up to 225 kW and 275 km, the FL Electric up to 130 kW and 450 km. pv magazine reported on 9 July 2026 that the first Australian-assembled Volvo electric trucks had come off the Wacol line, with an A$70 million Clean Energy Finance Corporation investment behind the project. No page gives a price, so ask the dealer for a written quote covering batteries, charger and warranty. See our electric vehicle finance page.

The NSW gap between the two three-axle charges is $8,373 (our arithmetic), and the FH700 is rated for 185,500 kg. A prime mover needs a trailer, so see our semi trailer cost guide, and for a tipper body the tipper truck cost guide.

Financing a Volvo truck

Ventas is a finance broker, not a lender, so we do not quote rates here. A Volvo is usually funded with a chattel mortgage, where you own the truck and the lender holds security over it, through a bank, a non-bank lender or the dealer's finance arm (see our chattel mortgage guide). Business-purpose credit is generally outside consumer credit rules, as ASIC explains.

Lenders like mainstream heavy-duty brands that resell easily, and Volvo prime movers generally fit. They get cautious as kilometres climb. A truck past a million kilometres, like the Bowral FH540, or one that will be old by the end of the term, can mean a shorter term, a bigger deposit or fewer lenders, and the 2.17 million km FH700 would be a hard file for many. A dealer sale with a roadworthy and service history is easier than an unregistered auction, and bodies such as compactors and water carts are harder to fund because they resell to a narrower market.

Illustrative only, subject to lender assessment. A used prime mover advertised at $190,000 ex GST (not one of the listings above):

ItemAmount
Truck price ex GST$190,000
GST$19,000
Inspection and transport (our allowance)$4,000
Registration, transfer and any state duty (our allowance, varies by state)$9,000
First insurance premium and working capital buffer (our allowance)$22,000
Total cash needed before the GST comes back$244,000

How the same purchase might be funded:

Truck finance, such as a chattel mortgage$142,50075 per cent of the ex GST priceThe truck
Your deposit: savings, or a property-backed loan$47,500The other 25 per cent of the priceCash, or your home or other property
GST$19,000Paid at purchase unless the lender funds it, then claimed back through the BAS if you are registeredCash or short-term funding
Costs and working capital$35,000Inspection, registration, insurance and a bufferCash
Total$244,000

Debt here is about 58 per cent of the cash needed (our arithmetic). A property-backed loan can cover the deposit and costs, with your property at risk if the work dries up.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Volvo truck cost in Australia?

Volvo's model pages show no prices, and a dealer quotes new trucks to spec. Used asking prices we opened ran from $25,000 ex GST for a 2005 FM12 prime mover to $239,000 inc GST for a 2022 FH600 with 695,383 km. Kilometres, rated weight and body drive the spread.

How much is a used Volvo FH?

Two FH540s asked $105,888 inc GST for a 2020 truck with 1,344,232 km and $219,950 inc GST for a 2019 Globetrotter with 640,035 km and a rebuilt engine. A 2016 FH700 with 2,166,912 km asked $49,500 inc GST.

How much does a Volvo FH16 cost?

We found no FH16 listing with a price we could open. Volvo lists a 17 litre D17 at 600, 700 or 780 hp and no price. Pickles lots for 2017 to 2022 FH16 prime movers show 744,842 to 1,597,349 km and no price. A 2022 FH600 with a 16 litre 600 hp engine asked $239,000 inc GST.

How much does a Volvo electric truck cost?

Volvo publishes no price for the FH, FM, FMX, FE or FL Electric. Its pages show 130 kW on the FL to 540 kW on the FH, FM and FMX, and ranges of up to 275, 400 or 450 km. Ask a dealer for a written quote covering batteries, charger and warranty.

Are Volvo and Mack trucks built in the same factory?

Yes. Both are Volvo Group brands assembled at Wacol in Brisbane, which pv magazine calls the only plant in the world making the two side by side. Volvo's plant page lists the FH, FM and FMX there, and Mack's the Trident, Superliner, Titan and Anthem.

Can I finance a used Volvo with over a million kilometres?

Sometimes, but expect questions. A lender weighs the truck's age when the loan ends, its kilometres, service history and the work behind it, which can mean a shorter term, a bigger deposit or fewer lenders. A roadworthy and dealer paperwork help. Approval is subject to lender assessment.
